This is the first time that I have read anything from Francine Rivers. Our ladies' group at church chose to read this as a group book study.FYI - this book is a collection of 5 stories of women in the lineage of Jesus. Each novella focuses on one of those 5 women.I really wasn't excited about the book and knew nothing of the author. However, I wanted to be supportive of the effort, so I started on the first section. Francine clearly states that she has fictionalized some of the details, but she is true to the Scriptures on the big stuff. The story of Tamar was interesting and really gave the mindset of women living in those times. Now that was truly an eye-opener! The author caught my attention with that aspect. I had never really thought about it that way.The following novellas on Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary captured my imagination as I thought about how they were viewed and how they relied on God. Overall, I highly recommend this book. While I know the stories from the Bible, Francine Rivers really put skin and bone on them.

I read it as different stories within one book, however, you can read each story as a separate novella if you would like. It was gripping and interesting that I wanted to read them back to back in one book rather than continually going back to purchase each individual novella. I am going to post the five stories separately.Each novella chronicles an account of five women in the Bible and their struggles they face. Rivers retells history beautifully that you truly remember these women as real people with tangible problems. Although these women lived in a time we can’t begin to understand their circumstances, their legacies are told in such a way that you begin to understand who they are and why they are important.The figures are ordinary, but are paramount to the lineage of Jesus Christ. Yes, they are all ascendants of Jesus, hence the term “lineage†in the title. This is the best book I've ever read. It's a close race with another of Francine Rivers' book (Redeeming Love). It was such a blessing to read. Since it's 5 different stories that put you in a realistic view of how these women lived and how God used them to change history, it's easy to read.I love this book so much, I now buy a copy and include it in gifts to other ladies that are in situations where reading helps pass the time (hospital stays, caregivers, etc.).
I originally purchased Lineage of Grace because of my study of Rahab and her tremendous faith which is listed as significant as that of Abraham in the New Testament. My past makes it difficult for me to find my place as a woman in my relatively new faith in Christ – about three and a half years. Finding and understanding the lives of women of the Bible is challenging. But it is critically important for me in my circumstances.Lineage of Grace presents five women who also experienced difficulty in finding their place as woman of faith. In different ways, each adapts her circumstances as she is able within her culture to develop her own special relationship with God. Admittedly fictionalized, these accounts are well researched and offer a plausible explanation for actions the modern Bible reader cannot understand without further clarification of the lives of biblical women within their cultural context. The examples of these five women you have shared helped make the personal transformation we each find through Christ more meaningful.
This was a totally entertaining book that includes opportunity for spiritual enlightenment. It combines fictional information with scripture stories about women who were very important characters in the lineage of Jesus. Sometimes it is difficult to recognize that the fiction story is not necessarily the scripture story. I would have given at least one more star if not for the confusion of the study guide. I have used the study guide in the back of the chapters with a (Bible study group) but found them to be a little frustrating because the guides do not always coincide with the chapters read in the book. The author makes a memorable point about the family history of Jesus and the grace of God.
It was a really well written book! I adored the first four stories- but was not so taken with the story of Mary. A very protestant view on Mary and the Resurrection - especially in the conclusion. I also felt Mary and Joseph's characters were not fully developed as they should be and that certain elements of Jewish traditions,Jewish Messianism and the prayers could have been more historically and factually based. For example the "Jehovah's" in Ruth's story etc would more likely be Hashem or Adonai in the Jewish tradition. The other books were incredibly well-written- especially Rahab's story. I would give it a four out of five because I was quite taken with the first four books and the character development of these strong women but not as much with the last piece.
