I found the second half of the book, under the heading "The Present and the Past," to be more interesting and informative. Here, Professor Osterhammel,helpfully explains many things while exploring many cultural issues, such as the concept of caste in India. As always with good histories, you will come away with a better understanding of the present (for example,did Afghanistan just get difficult in the last decade or two?).With notes and a bibliography that show the impressive range of learning--across time, languages and countries--by this German historian that went into forging this important book.As an aside, I think readers who are interested in this general subject area might want to read another good book published this year: "A World of Empires: The Russian Voyage of the Frigate Pallada" by Professor Bojanowska.
